Parkinsons Q&A

Why is my dog's head shaking like she has Parkinsons?

My chihuahua is about a year and a half old. I noticed today her head is shaking like someone with Parkinsons. It is strange. She is also low on energy. She went to lay down and take a nap and usually she's running around full of energy. She also seems kind of uncoordinated when she's jumping and walking. Is there something wrong with her?? Do dogs get Parkinsons or Neurological disorders?

Public Comments

  1. she has parkinsons
  2. dogs can get neurological disorders from all kinds of diseases so i would definantley have her checked by a vet asap.
  3. Soounds like a trip to the vet for you.
  4. dogs can get neurological disorders for sure. make an appointment with your vet if it doesn't get any better...could she possibly have gotten into anything? sometimes if they're poisoned they'll have neurological signs.
  5. You need to take the dog to the vet and let the vet answer this question.
  6. Dogs can get neurological disorders and seizures. This kind of sounds like something that can happen when dogs have a small seizure. They can also get problems with their thyroids, which can cause lethargy and weakness. I'd give the vet a call and tell them what's going on with the head shaking. This might be something as simple as an ear infection that's throwing off her balance, or something more complicated The vet will be able to help figure out what's wrong. The sleepiness and shaking make me a little concerned, so I'd take care of it as soon as you can - it could prevent a bigger problem if whatever this is done early. If it is seizures, be careful since dogs can accidentally bite and growl when they are seizing.
  7. I hope you got a vet appointment ASAP.
  8. go to the vet asap
  9. ah yes & yes. Obviously she needs to see a vet. But it could be something simple like a side effect to medication, allergies, a problem with her ears. So do not panic, but get it checked out ASAP. If her ears are good, ask your vet about allergies in connection with this symptom. Do not go running around to get an MRI or anything else super expensive, unless you try the simpler answers first. I had a mastiff once, who showed similar symptoms to "Woblers" a rare malformation of the vertibrae. I kid you not, I was just about to spend a gazillion dollars for an MRI when another vet suggested a head xray. It revealed a huge brain tumor. I lost my baby anyway, but I wanted to warn you about not getting ALL THE INFO, before you spend a lot of money.
